German Shepherd Dog price is a very controversial topic. There are several claims regarding this breed that sometimes turn out to be true and sometimes not.

With the popularity of this breed, several faults have also made their way into this breed. These genetic problems like Von Willebrand disease, Multifocal renal cystadenocarcinoma, Nodular dermatofibromas are some unknown to common man diseases. Hip, shoulder and elbow dysplasia, dead sperms, stillborn puppies are some more apparent problems that link this breed to genetic disorders.

Still, the service that this breed provides in security, search and rescue are remarkable. Coupled with the intelligence they possess, makes it one of the best breeds to own.

But there is a huge variation in the prices that puppies fetch.

What is in this article?

The problem of genetic disorders in German Shepherd dog is a topic for some other time.

In this article, I will try to explain why there is a huge variation in prices of puppies of this breed. You will find a pup as low as 5000/- rs and some demand for 5-6 lakh rs for their in house bred pups. There is an even higher demand for some dog show winners even asking northward of 15 lakh rs. So, how to determine whether the asking German Shepherd Dog price is justified or not? I personally am not in the support of exorbitant prices. For me a realistic price that justifies efforts and finance input of the breeder is correct. Here are my personal views on the German shepherd price.

I really do not want to compel any breeder to apply my recommendations. A true breeder knows the need to price their pups right otherwise there is always a risk of getting out of business within a few breeding cycles. Instead, this is a reference guide for buyers.

German Shepherd Price : The lower spectrum.

By the lower spectrum, I mean lower-priced puppies. In this range, puppies are priced anywhere from 5000/- rs to 15,000/- rs. Now, you may find good puppies. This range is alright for as home pets. The reason for the variable German Shepherd Dog price is due to the involvement of non-professional and/or household breeders that breed dogs for pocket money. So, in this range, the effort placed into deciding the characteristics of offspring. The whelping and lactating mothers will not be nourished properly. They will be too keen to sell puppies as soon as mother stops feeding them. Because of this practice, most of the genetic disorders are not recognizable.

Most of the times so-called breeders of this class will ignore the genetic faults in their breeding stock. Hell, they ignore even the most basic needs of their pets. And what happens afterwards? They dump their breeding stock to ignorant houses or on streets. The conclusion of this is that its highly unlikely that you will be getting a good specimen in this range. Though, there is a possibility of getting a decent healthy pup at the higher end of this range. They might be alright in appearance but in no case, you can be sure about the internal structure.

The middle range.

In this range, there come dogs that are being presently shown in different dog shows. You may find pups, old adult dogs and bitches mostly but sometimes pregnant females are also found in the trade. This ranges usually start from 15,000 rs and goes up to 1.5 lakh rs.

The lower spectrum of this range will usually fetch puppies that are of dogs and bitches running around in shows a few years back. Such puppies may cost you around 15,000-30,000/- rs, depending upon the shows in which parents were shown previously.

Reputed shows with the affiliation of FCI or KCI and German Shepherd speciality show performers will be priced higher in the range. Puppies of parents from these shows will go from 35,000/-75,000/- of course, for those who know their value. One thing is sure that these dogs will be as close as possible to the standards issued by different canine standard governing organizations. So, you will get beautiful and striking dogs.

German Shepherd Dog Price: The premium range

This range of German Shepherd Dog price starts after the middle range, Obviously. But there is no capping over this range. There are several pups, adults and females going for 1-2 lakh rs. I have seen show winners priced at 6 lakh rs and sold immediately. I have seen dogs that are claimed to have been bought by the owner for 20+ lakh. And some rumours of imported dogs over fifty lakh rs. Yes, the German Seiger Show top 10 goes for this price. Most might not be able to even get a chance to watch these dogs but yes this is reality.

That’s why top breeders are crazy to compete and win in the Seiger shows. Oh, and the prestigious Westminster dog show! I don’t know what level of the exorbitant financial game involved.

So, are these the best of the best! Yes, definitely. Are these free form every problem? No.

Conclusion.

Well, personally I have been deep embedded into this breed from 2001 till 2103. Yes, more than a decade. Done several shows and was in love with this breed. But then in the middle stage of my career as a breeder, I noticed and was subjected to several unfortunate events that made me dig deep and understand more. In my upcoming articles, I will discuss everything I have learnt about the problems with the German Shepherd dog. Be it genetics, puppy mills abuse, ignorant owners, poor nutrition, worse living conditions and many more. But for now, let me give a short note. Try to go for the middle range. This will get you better cared for pups and in most cases healthy pups. Some genetic problems like dysplasia of big bone joints are inevitable. But most of these problems can be delayed in well cared for dogs. Also, a caring breeder dealing in the middle range is likely to ensure the best possible care.

But you must keep it in your mind that when dealing with live animals it is simply not possible to ensure every specimen to be of top-notch and free from all faults. Nature has its ways to teach us things and God has his ways to make us aware of our mortality.
