English Grey Hound Health Problem

  1. In general Grey hounds are healthy and long lived breed.
  2. Genetic disorders are very rare.
  3. This breed can suffer from lifestyle disorders.
  4. Because of extremely thin built and very little fat beneath skin they are very uncomfortable on hard surfaces.
  5. Grey hounds, if left on hard surfaces for a very long time will develop skin sores.
  6. The protruding bones, especially of elbows, shoulder, hips and ankles tend be develop painful sores.
  7. To prevent this condition, soft supportive bedding should be available at all times.
  8. Cleanliness should also be maintained.
  9. Some disorders like ‘Esophageal achalasia, bloat (Gastric dilation volvulus), Osteosarcoma, some cancers, hip and elbow joint problems are most commonly surfaced problems.
  10. Grey hounds have relatively low levels of blood platelets and high concentration of red blood cells.
  11. Extreme temperature, both high and low are not good for grey hounds.
  12. This breed does not have undercoat.
  13. Absence of undercoat coupled with very thin layer of flat under the skin makes them vulnerable in case of extreme cold or hot climate.
  14. Most commonly they suffer from bloat.
  15. To avoid bloat they must be fed 2-3 times a day. Each time a small portion of food can be given.
  16. Difficult to digest and fatly foods must be avoided.
  17. Never take them out for a walk, a quick play or exercise immediately after feeding them.
  18. Grey hounds are hyper sensitive to drugs.
  19. Administrating commonly used drugs can cause severe allergic reactionor led to medical complications.
  20. Because of this common flea and tick drugs, shampoos, puppets, collars etc. should not be used without through constellation with a vet having rich experience of working with Grey hounds.
  21. Under good care grey hounds are expected to live between 10-14 years.
  22. Usually 6-8-puppies are born but little sieges of 1to12 are not very uncommon.
  23. In case of large letters, you need to be extra cautions with temperature fluctuation in puppies and mother alike.
