Top 10 Military Dogs in the World: We know there is no field where we don’t have dogs to serve us. From very ancient times dogs have been used in wars. So, one of the most difficult field for human and dogs are in the field of the military. When we see the soldiers in uniform we somewhere understand their working conditions and their duties in harsh conditions. They are heroes in uniform. Saying that we should not forget the dedication of dogs in the military department. They also go through those harsh conditions side by side with our brave soldiers. 1. German Shepherd: The best of top 10 military dogs.

The German shepherd is an all-rounder of the canine world. I don’t think there is any field where they are not used. So, how can this breed be not included in military service? Yay! They are also part of military service. They have been serving since world war 1 and have been used in many tasks as sentry, messengers, trackers, and search and rescue missions. They are intelligent, highly trainable, courageous, and can work in dangerous and stressful situations making them the best choice as military dogs. They have all the qualities a military dog should have to serve as detection dogs, sentry, search and rescue, trackers, and protection dogs. These are multipurpose military dogs.

2. Dutch Shepherd

Dutch shepherds were developed for herding and patrolling livestock and their protection in the Netherlands. So, as it is a herding dog, it is an intelligent, protective, and highly active dog. They can work continuously for long hours and are highly trainable as other shepherd dogs. This breed is still rare but, now has found use in military services other than herding which function they have already lost long back. They are used as patrol dogs, trackers, search and rescue missions, and protection. This dog is also a multipurpose military dog.

3. Belgian Malinois: another of the top 10 military dogs.

Belgian Malinois is another herding dog as above breeds well known for their speed and quick reflexes. This breed can even outpace German shepherds in speed. These are also very protective, loyal, and easily trainable. They are at the top of the list like German shepherds for police and military jobs. Its quick reflexes are a bonus for military services. This is another hardy breed that can work under stressful and dangerous conditions. They are used for the detection of bombs, arms, and ammunition, etc, search and rescue and for patrolling.

4. Doberman Pinscher. My personal favorite of the top 10 military dogs.

Dobermans are serving in the military since world war 1 and are also the most preferred breed for the military. One of the worst use of these dogs at that time was suicide dogs in world war 2 by USSR. They do not deserve such cruel application by the army. Nowadays they are not used for such things. They have a glorious history as war dogs.  They are loyal, intelligent, and have high protective instincts they were bred for this particular trait. They are also highly trainable. They are very smart. They are used as sentry, protection, search, and rescue, for detection of mines, etc, and for patrolling.

5. Boxer

Boxer was bred for a lot of functions like herding, hunting, bull-baiting, etc. We can say it is a multipurpose dog and is the top five breed desired for military services. They also have a history of serving as war dogs from world war 1 like other top military dogs. They are loving, smart, loyal, highly active, and highly trainable. They are used in detection, sentry, and search and rescue.

6. Beagle

Beagles are sweet and are famous for their excellent sense of which is a quality required as war dogs among other qualities. This breed is small in size and can get to those places where big dogs find it difficult to approach which is an added advantage. Beagles are recently introduced in the military for their good sense of smell like a scent hound and small size. Pocket beagle is being preferred as a detection and tracking dog.

7. Labrador Retriever

Labrador retrievers were bred for mainly retrieving hunted fouls. They are commonly seen on military bases. They are another good choice as military dogs. They are friendly, even-tempered, and highly trainability with a good sense of smell. They are used as detection dogs, tracking dogs, and in search and rescue missions. In addition to all these applications they have an extra function which is not given to other military dog breeds and that is they are used as combat stress controllers for soldiers in combat areas to relieve their stress.

8. Giant Schnauzer

Giant Schnauzers are the largest of all the three sizes of Schnauzer breed. This breed was initially developed for droving cattle and for protection. Although they are little hard-headed, they are loyal, smart, protective, and have a high drive. These dogs are very wary of strangers. In world war 1 and 2 they served very well as army war dogs. Their popularity went down with the increasing popularity of German Shepherd and Belgian Malinois. But, now they are again making back into the military. They are included as patrol dogs and detection dogs for bombs and mines. One such inclusion is a dog named Broke.

9. Bouvier Des Flanders

This breed is another herding dog in the list of military dogs. This is a strong dog who is highly active as other herding dog breeds with high territorial instinct. These dogs also have their beginning of war dog careers from both world wars. They are loyal, highly intelligent, and easily trainable. Even it is said that they never forget the learned lessons. In today’s time, they are used as search and rescue dogs and sentry dogs in the military.

10. Black Russian Terrier

Black Russian Terrier is the only breed that came into existence especially for the military purpose from its existence by the Russian military. They are a very new addition to the dog breeds list. They are large, shaggy, and strong breeds specifically bred for military purposes mainly for guarding. They are dominant and need experienced handlers. They were bred with those breeds which were particularly used in wars in world wars like giant Schnauzer, Airedale terrier, Rottweiler, etc, having 17 to 20 dog breeds in their bloodline. They have good stamina suitable for working in stressful and harsh conditions. They are used as patrol dogs, guarding military bases, sentry dogs, detection dogs, and search and rescue dogs. They are intelligent, highly active, and have strong guarding instincts.

  1. You forgot to add ROTTWEILER smart.loyal.highly trainable.great sense of smell. And used in the military for Intel, detection, and security. Police for tracking,search & rescue, Police for drug and firearms (DEA) don’t know how you could miss adding this breed.
