In the first chapter of this series we were discussing the Afghan hound and have given a brief account of temperament and behavior of Afghan hound in our previous post. In our previous post, we have brought some problems regarding Afghan hound. In this post, we will highlight those problems and try to explain those problems.

Let us look into possible solutions to this problem.

The first step to keep an Afghan hound or for that matter any other dog breed happily integrated in the family one need to accept all the breed specific traits of the dog breed they are fancy of. You need to fully accept that an Afghan hound is difficult to train breed and is stubborn, aloof, strong-willed, moody and overall difficult to handle dog breed.

This is the difficult part; to control your mind; isn’t it?

Once you are open to above facts consider the needs of such an independent sighthound breed that has been developed to be fierce. For example, you may consider following questions;

  • Are you willing to provide 10-12 km daily run to your Afghan hound?
  • Are you living in such a place where you could be able to keep a hunting dog breed?
  • Is your home spacious enough to accommodate a large hunting breed that loves its comfort?
  • Are you willing to devote about an hour daily for untangling knots formed in Afghan hound’s coat?
  • Expenses of grooming your Afghan hound are easy for you?
  • Are you willing to store and provide a wide variety of commercial and homemade food to your Afghan hound?
  • Are you willing to have a strongminded Afghan hound around small children in your family?
  • Can you devote time an Afghan hound needs to be happy?
  • Are you willing to devote your time to provide mental stimulation to your Afghan hound? They easily get bored!
  • And many such questions should be considered before stepping up to Afghan hound.
