Irish Wolfhound Dog Breed Origin

The origins of Irish Wolfhound dates back to 5th century in Ireland. These dogs ownership was only limited to kings and noble families. Numbers of Irish Wolfhound to be kept were determined on the positions in nobility. These dogs were used as war dogs, gaurd dogs and for hunting boars and wolves.

Irish Wolfhound Dog Breed: Physical Appearance

Head of Irish Wolfhound is broad at forhead and narrow towards muzzle. This is a muscular large sized dog. The tail is long, thick and carried low. Ears are small drop shaped and carried back. Coat is rough, wiry and short. Accepted coat colour are brindle, grey, white, red, black, fawn and wheaten.

Irish Wolfhound Dog Breed: Training

It is best advised to train your Irish Wolfhound when it is puppy. They need calm and firm handlers. They are easy to train. Leash control training is must from early Irish Wolfhound puppy hood as their size becomes enormous quickly and they love to pull on leash.

  • Life expectancy is short and is 6 to 8 years.
  • Litter size is 2 to 12 Irish Wolfhound puppies.

Irish Wolfhound Dog Breed: Health challenges

They are prone to mainly bone cancer and bloating. Other problems of this breed are gastrointestinal problems, heart diseases, pneumonia, liver shunt, bleeding disorders, eye disorders and seizures. Other than these bone injuries due to their size and activity level.
