‘Azawakh’ an introduction: Hello reader! Welcome to the series of dog breeds presented to you by Kaivalaya’s Ani-Mall. We are presently in the first part of our series in which we were presenting sighthounds. Moving to our next breed we will be discussing the Azawakh.
The Azawakh is one of the lesser known sighthound breeds. Native to the West African region of the Azawakh valley they are sight hounds with the breed specific function of game chasing being neglected because of the absence of game animals in the region. The Azawakh has been assigned to the livestock guardian duties for past numerous centuries, Azawakh being an ancient breed.
The dog similar to Azawakh has been reported in history throughout the region of Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso, the region to which modern Azawakh is held native to. Most notably Azawakh has been associated with the nomadic ethnic African tribe of Tuareg.
Other than Tuareg tribe, Azawakh has been owned and bred by other West African ethnic groups like Peulh, Bella and Hausa.

As we have witnessed in the case of Afghan hound there are several variations and local names for Azawakh also. This nomenclature depends on the region of association and the group of people Azawakh is associated with.
Azawakh: Rarity of the Breed
As I have told you earlier the Azawakh is a lesser known breed of sighthound group. The reason for this is a rarity of the breed. Azawakh has not either been recognized by important kennel clubs or been enlisted in the foreign breed or import breed register.
For example, the Azawakh had been placed in the Foundation Stock Service ( FSS) register of the AKC or American kennel club. This section of AKC register is reserved for a newly introduced breed that is not been officially registered by the club yet.

Looking closely one can easily imagine that why the Azawkh had been called as related to another African sight hound breed the Sloughi. It is easy to confuse Azawakh with Soulghi as many times people do but in our upcoming posts, we will clarify this difference in depth.
