Precautions With These Ingredients

There are some risks that you should consider. Some dogs may get gastric torsion because of milk, for instance. I may add that vegetables are fed only cooked. Well, it is sometimes owners choice in the way they want to cook. I always boil and make vegetable soup, for instance, for my dogs.

I can give you one more example. Apple is never given the whole, for instance. Apple seeds have cyanide in them, so they must be avoided at all costs.

Importantly, you can easily avoid any fatality by discarding the seeds. Moreover, there are a few more precautions you should take with most of these ingredients. So, let us start.

Vegetable Soup for Dogs

Pick 5 to 6 vegetables. My choice are pumpkin, carrot, zucchini, bottle gourd, peas, cabbage, cauliflower. What amount of each can be taken depends on your dog breed? For instance, I will enlist the proportions that I prepare for my German shepherd.

So, to make soup for my dogs I take the following quantities of ingredients.

  • Pumpkin 3 inches by 3 inches piece.
  • Carrot one whole.
  • Zucchini half.
  • Bottle gourd 3 inches stem.
  • Peas half a teacup.
  • Cabbage chopped half a teacup.
  • Cauliflower 1-2 florets (1/4 teacup without stems).

Recipe for Vegetarian Soup for Your Dog

Add 1/4 cup rice. If your dog is young then you can use brown rice. If they are old then you can assess their digestibility and use white rice if it’s weak. The reason behind this is that brown rice is better in providing fibre but it’s difficult to digest.

Cut all ingredients into small size or in other words roughly chop them down. Now after this place all of them into a pressure cooker and pour an ample amount of water. In addition to this add a pinch or two organic turmeric powder. Adding turmeric gives herbal benefits to the soup, additionally.

Cook on medium flame with lid closed up to 4 whistles and your soup is ready. Let it cool down a bit till its manageable by bare hands.

Now after this you can do two things. Firstly you can give them this soup as it is if your dog likes to munch on soft vegetables. Or, secondly, you can blend it to a fine paste. Both options are good and work well according to your pet’s habits.

Combining Dairy in Vegetarian Recipes for Dogs

Firstly, milk is not always digestible for all dogs. Several dogs will have lactose intolerance, for instance. And when this condition is combined with breeds that are prone to bloat, sometimes conditions go out of hand. So, what can you do? Test your dogs’ gut response with a very small amount of milk at first. You must stop at any sign of distress at once and stop feeding them milk.

So what can be done then? Well, you may opt for Curd. I must say that this is the best option and I am using curd for the past 20 years as the base of almost all preparations for my dogs. I mix curd in almost every meal I feed to my dogs.

I will not go into details of benefits of curd but here I will just point out that this is very good for gut health.

So, without any fear, you can mix curd into this soup.

Simple Meals

If you are busy then there are some combinations that you can give to your dog. Let us now examine these quickly.

Fruits as snacks.

In an earlier article, I have given a complete list of fruits and precautions that should be taken. So, here I will only list a few recipes with fruits as ingredients.

Raw chopped and seeds removed apples, mango, pomegranate pulp, musk melon, watermelon, cantaloupe, banana. All in small quantities as treats.

you can bake some apple slices in the oven to make apple chips.

Once again I would like to draw your attention towards precautions. Never feed them fruits with seeds and always give small portions properly peeled. always chop down in easy to swallow size. Use them as treat, fruits are not a staple food for dogs.

Small breeds can manage with the amount of protein supplied by vegetarian diet but for large and giant breeds you need to provide animal protein in some form. So, ultimately you have to add eggs, chicken, lamb, pork or beef to your dog’s diet. Its a personal choice but being a pet parent it’s our duty to give them what is prescribed by science.
