When I saw it in the picture for the first time I instantly developed a liking for it. At that time he was around  4 months old and at such a small age he already has some good head development and the red pigmentation. So I agreed with the wholesale dealer to send a batch of 10 flower horn fishes of two different breeds namely the king kamfa flower horn and the super red dragon flowerhorn, five each.

After selling all other I kept this one for myself.

From the point of pick up, I directly dropped all orders directly to the specified addresses given by customers and then reached home to place my chosen one in the aquarium.

To accommodate him I had already vacated the 75 liters aquarium of my King Kamfa Flower horn. You can check this king kamfa flower horn in my earlier posts by clicking on the links below.

I moved this king kamfa flowerhorn in a new 125 liters capacity aquarium.

Before introducing this super red dragon flowerhorn I cleaned the aquarium with hydrochloric acid and washed it for 4 times then wiped it clean with a damp cloth dipped in hot water. This is necessary for the protection of the new baby flowerhorn as the previous king kamfa flowerhorn was housed here for more than 5 months. When a fish stays in an aquarium they would adjust their biological factors like immunity, digestion etc. according to the water. This states that there will be some presence of microbial population living in harmony with the earlier fish. These microbes may have a devastating effect on a new fish, especially if the new fish is in the infant stage. To give the new baby fish a better chance of survival and thriving in the new environment this kind of cleaning is essential.

Introducing new Super Red Dragon Flowerhorn baby to the aquarium

After doing this I poured one day standing boiled water in the aquarium, 55 liters to be accurate. After that, I placed the plastic pouch containing the super red dragon flowerhorn baby in the water and waited for 20 minutes. When I realized that the temperature inside the bag will be approximately equal to the aquarium water then I opened the plastic bag and released the super red dragon flowerhorn baby into the aquarium.

He was cheerful and happily explored his new home. At that time everything seemed normal. I left home for a dinner date with my wife. (we do this every Sunday evening on regular basis, sometimes there is a gap of a couple of weeks due to work and business, but this love affair is going on for past 17 years).

Close inspection reveals the development of white spots on gill area. The infection is appearing manageable.

When I returned home after a couple of hours I didn’t notice anything abnormal regarding this new super red dragon flowerhorn baby. But in the night when I was going to sleep I got a hunch that something is wrong. I immediately examined him and at first glance, I didn’t notice anything wrong. My wife said, “everything is alright let’s go to sleep”. But deep inside I have some feeling that is making me uncomfortable. To answer my fear I examined him in bright white LED light. Instantly my fear was answered. He was suffering from the white spot disease.  But at that point in time, the problem seemed controllable. So I just poured the requisite amount of blue aquarium medicine and added a couple of tablespoons sea salt in the aquarium and went to sleep.

Next morning I noticed some of the white spots getting bigger but I was a little relieved to see larger portions infected to be reduced to some small patches. At that time I noticed some deformation in color of the head growth of this baby Super Red Dragon Flowerhorn. I didn’t give it too much attention as I thought that it would be because of the medicine and the sea salt.

Sea salt sometimes gives this kind of side effect when comes in touch with scaleless fishes and the head growth in the flowerhorn fish is fleshy and susceptible to such reactions.

I went out on my business and day went as usual. When I returned I thought to feed this baby super red dragon flowerhorn fish because it is already more than 24 hours elapsed since I have introduced it the new aquarium. When I lifted the tank top of that aquarium I was shocked and scared at the first glance of the baby Super Red Dragon Flowerhorn. There is a big hole in his head (it is going to get even bigger in near future as I’ll give you detailed account later in this article). My fear was that he was struck with the sunken head disease. I’ll give a detailed account of this disease in my upcoming posts. For now, let us examine this particular Super Red Dragon Flowerhorn baby.

Sunken Head Disease: Infection worsened and the head is starting to open

When I first witnessed the hole in the head growth I still had hope that he would recover and added some liquid antibiotic in the tank to aid healing and recovery. But next day I was frightened to look at his head. The hole had enlarged and had reached the length of the entire head. This just happened overnight.  The hole had deepened also and on to close examination I thought that the skull is now visible.  He is not eating for past three days. I don’t know what is going to happen. I am afraid that I might lose him in a couple of days.

Seems that skull bone is peeking out.

Please pray for him. I hear prays work wonders.
