The foremost and first question that you need to ask before rearing an Afghan hound is of finance.

Does your pocket allow you to buy an Afghan hound? Being a difficult breed to cope with Afghan hound does not have as many reputed breeders as in case if you are in the market for a Labrador or a German shepherd. Rarity always comes at a price. For example, if a Labrador, in general, comes for about 120-150$ then it is expected from an Afghan hound puppy to sell for 1000$ to 1200$. Ye,s they are that expensive and that too from a budding breeder. Prices are going to get up if you would acquire an Afghan hound pup from a champion breeder. Even before considering the diet for an Afghan hound the price to bring a pup should be taken into consideration.

Talking about diet, it’s not an easy walk here also. As explained in my earlier posts Afghan hound is a moody dog breed. Considering just one commercial pet food would not be a good idea. Even if you could train your Afghan hound to enjoy one type of commercial dog food your Afghan hound will grow up with some serious nutritional deficiencies.

The problem doesn’t lie with any of the dog food brands you are considering but it is with the need of Afghan hound dog breed.

Being a sighthound of ancient lineage the Afghan hound is a racy dog breed. Almost all sighthound dog breeds look thin and starving but if you provide them the exercise they need they will surprise you with the quantity of raw or cooked food they can consume. A friend of mine is breeding a native sighthound that closely resembles Saluki. The dogs might be weighing just 22-25 kg but they will consume 2 kg of chicken with rice or porridge at one time. And they eat for two times a day. This will be a similar situation in case of an Afghan hound. Might be not that much of quantity but still, the 10% of body weight is still expensive especially if you choose to give the best brands like Royal Canine, Hill’s prescription diet or any other high-end dog food.

Other things to consider before getting an Afghan hound like grooming expenses, training, and exercising, general health problems, breed-specific health problems etc. will be explained in our upcoming posts.
