Hi everyone. 10 things you must know about German shepherd before getting one sprouted out of my own experience of living with German shepherds for past 18 years. This topic is rather controversial. Some have some things on priority some have some other things on priority. I relate to this topic very closely as I have been into German shepherd breeding and have owned 12 German shepherd dogs at a time.

I will tell you things that I have encountered in past 18 years living with German shepherd dogs. Exercise for German shepherd dogs

I have seen many people that fancy over the size, wolf like appearance, strength and intelligence of a German shepherd dog but seldom have they known about what they are getting into and how to cope up with the future challenges. Most of the time people are ignorant towards the needs of their GSD but many are uninformed or misinformed about their dog by irresponsible pet dealers or novice dog breeders. Though, in most cases pet a dealer is just another trader dealing in pets that they treat as a commodity to sell at a price. Information about the wellbeing of a dog is not a matter of concern for them because they neither are involved in responsible breeding nor they have love for animals. We will talk about this later for now let us concentrate on 10 things you should know about German shepherd; before getting one.

German shepherd has been developed to serve man side by side in some of the most demanding and challenging environments faced by humans. They have a very strong muscle structure and have a lot of nervous energy stored in them.

They need exercise and a lot of it. Just taking one out for a short walk will not solve the purpose.

To keep a GSD happy you need to exercise them a lot and that is why I have always advised my customers to not to get one for small children until and unless parents are going to assist them in properly exercising their dogs. I have stated earlier in my post about exercising your dogs that running is the best exercise you can give your GSD. That’s why I do recommend this dog to active young people and also to children in their high teens.

For very active breeds like German shepherd dog, Doberman, Dalmatian etc. running is the best. Running not only provides much needed mental stimulation for them but also subside the wanderlust to some extent if the running sessions are long enough. But one must take into consideration of capability and stamina of the individual dog they are exercising. Different individuals of same breed can have different energy levels and that is perfectly fine. It is up to the owner to assess the limit of their own dog.

I take my dogs for running in early morning just before sunrise. I usually cover a distance of 4 kilometers at around 5:15-5:30am right around sunrise, then a short training session for 20-30 minutes at 6 am on terrace of our house. I will explain the need of this short daily training session later as this is also very important for your dogs.

In the evening I take them for a 2-2.5 kilometers walk and then play with them for 40-45 minutes with different toys on terrace. Since I am having multiple dogs I use different toys. Two of my females prefer small hard plastic balls, one likes tennis ball, a male and a female likes foot ball and one male and another female have a particular following for basket ball. All of them love tug-of-war with a rope. I usually manage to pull up a victory with one or two pooches of mine but when they all pull in one direction I am bound to taste the defeat. It’s fun tough!
