Hungarian Greyhound Origin, Size, Temperament and Training

Hungarian Greyhound is a tough, yet docile medium sized sighthound which is named greyhound but, they are not actually greyhound. In its country of origin they are called Magyar agár or more suited name is Hungarian gazehound. They are most reserved to strangers among all sighthounds and are better at gaurding than other sighthounds. They at first look resemble to greyhound but, there are many physical differences between both. They are good hunters as well as good companions. They are famous in their own country but, are rare worldwide.

Hungarian Greyhound Origin

The skulls of Hungarian greyhound type dogs have been found in Carpathian mountains dating back around 10th century. It is believed sometimes that they came along with Magyars when they were passing through Carpathian mountains into Hungary and Transylvania. Some believe that they were already present in Carpathian mountains well before Magyars arriving in these mountains. The proper records are not present before 17th century. The actual history of these hounds are not very clear. They were used for hunting by coursing, tracking and track racing. They are good with long distance running. They were also good companion dogs. It was recognised by United Kennel Club at 2006.

Hungarian Greyhound Temperament

This one is docile, devoted, affectionate and loyal to be perfect as companion. They are calm and quiet inside. They are somewhat reserved to strangers. They are intelligent and also have gaurding instinct. So, they can also be good gaurding dogs. Since they are from sighthound family, they are highly active. They need an appropriate sized and safe fenced area to satisfy their gallop. They need proper physical activities to keep them content. They can adapt any type of dwelling and even in kennel if proper physical activities are provided. They are not much good with small pets. They are good with children. They are tough in working and have high hunting instinct.

Hungarian Greyhound Physical Appearance

Hungarian greyhounds are rectangular in shape and are heavy boned. They are muscular and sleek in built. They are deep chested and are medium sized. They have wedge shaped head with somewhat shorter snout. They have raised rose ears. They have dense, short and coarse coat with undercoat only during winters. Coat can come in various colours accepted in sighthounds. Tail is long reaching hocks and carried moderately high.

Hungarian Greyhound Grooming

They are low maintenance dogs. The coat does not need regular brushing and should be brushed once a week with slicker brush and then wiping with dry wipe or cloth. Deshedder should be used during heavy shedding months that is spring. They need bath in few months.

  • Teeth should be brushed with soft bristles brush regularly.
  • Nails should be trimmed regularly around once in two or three weeks.
  • Ears should be cleaned monthly and checked for build ups weekly.

Hungarian Greyhound Nutrition

They can do good with any premium quality dog food for medium to large breed dog. The dogs which are used for active sports should be given dog food tailored for active dogs. BARF is also good option as food for them.

Hungarian Greyhound Training

As Hungarian greyhounds are intelligent, they are quite easily trained. But, still they are harder to train than some breeds like Labrador, German Shepherd etc as they are little bit independent and sensitive. Training becomes easy with persistent training and positive reinforcement. An experienced person with sighthounds is better for it. Training should be started from early age. Early socialisation is must as they are reserved to strangers. They should be leash trained from early as sighthounds have high prey drive.

Hungarian Greyhound Health Challenges

This breed is robust and healthy. Still some breedings can be prone to epilepsy, thyroid disorders, hip dysplasia and eye issues. They are prone to bloating due to deep chested.
