One of my friend went to Croatia with my family and dog, not long ago. Croatia is magnificent. They had fun seeing the sea, the old cities, and nature. But before they could have fun, they had to make sure their dog could go to Croatia.

It was not like walking in a park but it was not very tough.

You have to do proper research which will eat a lot of your valuable time. You must know and do many things before taking your pet to Croatia. If you don’t, you may have problems. They may not let you and your pet in at the border. If they don’t let you in, they may send your pet back or keep it away from you.

That sounds bad, right? But don’t be afraid, because I’ll share some of his advice. In this article, I will tell you what you need to know and do to make your trip easy for you and your pet.

What Pets Can You Bring?

In Croatia, the following animals are considered pets: 

  • Dogs
  • Cats
  • Ferrets
  • Invertebrates (except for bees and crabs)
  • Decorative tropical fish
  • Amphibians
  • Reptiles
  • Birds
  • Rodents
  • Rabbits.

Pets that are not for sale or transfer and are traveling with their owner or a person the owner trusts are considered non-commercial.

If you are entering Croatia with up to five pets, the Customs Administration officials at the entry points check their documents and identification.

Requirements for Bringing Pets to Croatia

Before you pack your bags and your pet’s favorite toys, there are a few key requirements you need to meet:

  1. Microchip: Your pet must have a microchip implanted before they receive their rabies vaccination. If the microchip does not comply with ISO standards 11784 or 11785, you must provide a suitable microchip reader.
  1. Pet Passport or Certificate: Your pet must have a passport or certificate issued by a veterinarian authorized by the competent authority. The passport should indicate the date until which the vaccination is valid.  You also need to provide a declaration of ownership.
  1. Rabies Vaccination: Your pet must be vaccinated against rabies. The validity period of vaccination begins with establishing protective immunity, usually on the 21st day after vaccination.
  1. Antibody Titration Test: Dogs, cats, and ferrets originating from high-risk countries must be subjected to an antibody titration test of at least 0.5 IJ/ml on a sample taken by an authorized veterinarian, no sooner than 30 days after vaccination and three months before movement across the border.
  2. Customs Duty and VAT: Proof of payment of customs duty and VAT, if applicable.

Points of Entry

Pets, except birds, can enter Croatia with their owner or someone the owner trusts at these places:

  • By road: Bajakovo, Batina, Erdut, Gunja, Gornji Brgat, Ilok, Kamensko, Karasovići, Klek, Ličko Petrovo Selo, Maljevac, Metković, Nova Sela, Slavonski Brod, Slavonski Šamac, Stara Gradiška, Strmica, Tovarnik, Vinjani Donji, Vukovar, Zaton Doli and Županja.
  • By train: Tovarnik.
  • By sea: Dubrovnik, Ploče, Rijeka, Split and Zadar.
  • By river: Drava–Osijek and Vukovar.
  • By air: Dubrovnik, Mali Lošinj, Osijek, Pula, Rijeka, Split, Zadar and Zagreb.

For pet birds, they can enter Croatia at these places:

  • By road: Bajakovo, Karasovići, Nova Sela and Stara Gradiška.
  • By air: Zagreb.

Pets can enter Croatia from Andorra, the Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marino, Switzerland, and Vatican City State at any entry point, including ports and airports towards the EU where customs checks are done.
