11.Ryukin Goldfish

Another fancy variety of Goldfish, the Ryukin Goldfish has a huge fan following.
Going by the appearance you can call this breed as humpback Goldfish. They have a very peculiar appearance with very high and arched back, plus they have an egg-shaped body giving them a fat discus kind of appearance. But they are beautiful. I think that having a high back somewhat limits their ability to swim but when they swim they are so many cute fishes to watch. That fat jelly butt is shaking like a belly dancer, with slow, flowing and wavy movements.

Ryukin Goldfish are said to have been developed in Japan and are related to the Fan Tail Goldfish. As the Ryukin Goldfish is related to the Fantail Goldfish there are a lot of similarities in both of these breeds of Goldfish. For example, both Fantail and Ryukin Goldfish are egg-shaped body variety of Goldfish. They both have split and double tail fin. On Ryukin Goldfish the back fin is also present. They also have double anal fin.

The most distinguishable feature of the Ryukin Goldfish is the high arched humpback. Actually, it is revered that, ‘the higher the back arch, the better the specimen is’.This hump on the back of Ryukin Goldfish starts from just behind the neck and is extended up to just the beginning of the tail fin. This gives Ryukin Goldfish a pointy head appearance.

Ryukin Goldfish grows up to 6 inches in length, just like Fantail Goldfish. But in properly maintained aquariums with ample aeration, adequate space for individual fish and with proper nutrition they can become considerably bigger. Some hobbyists have claimed their fishes to have reached up to 10 inches in length. As for the life expectancy for Ryukin Goldfish they generally live to 10+ years. But in properly maintained large aquariums and ponds they are reported to have lived up to 20 years.

Let us now examine the available colors. Ryukin Goldfish display a wide variety of colors. In solid colors, they are found in red, orange, calico, white and chocolate. Bi-color and tricolor varieties are also available. Personally, I like the tri-color variety more than solid and bi-colored varieties, particularly in the case of Ryukin Goldfish.

Ryukin Goldfish are a hardier variety of fancy Goldfish. They are easier to take care but please remember that even though they are hardy don’t push them to limits. Remember to change around one third to little less than half of the total water in the aquarium. Also, provide them aeration and filtration of moderate levels.

They are enjoyable pets and with little efforts, you can easily maintain and manage them.

12.Shubunkin GoldFish

Shubunkin Goldfish is also a fancy variety of goldfish but is unlike any other fancy variety. Shubunkin Goldfishes are long bodied fancy Goldfish, long like stretched out elongated, if you are comparing with other fancy varieties like Ryukin Goldfish, Oranda Goldfish, Ranchu Goldfish etc. which are more rounded off and shaped like an egg. Shubunkin Goldfish are a flat-bodied variety of Goldfish somewhat like Comet Goldfish and Common Goldfish. The head of the Shubunkin Goldfish is wider than their body but not as long as in the case of the Common Goldfish or the Comet Goldfish. Their head tapers done at their mouth end smoothly giving a non-pointy appearance to their head.
Speaking about the specimen with show potential, the fins of Shubunkin Goldfish should stand fully erect. On the edges, their fins are not sharp or straight but are slightly concave. As for the tail fin, there are two types of variety present.

A fish that resembles the Common Goldfish are called as the London Type Shubunkin Goldfish. London Type Shubunkin Goldfish have short tails. They have a body structure that can be compared to the common goldfish. As stated earlier they have a long slender body with almost no bump of the belly area. As stated earlier, they have relatively smooth head and smaller body structure compared to the Common Goldfish. The difference is not particularly clear in juveniles but as they mature the difference in breeds becomes clearer.

The second variety is known as Bristol Type Shubunkin Goldfish. You can look this variety as the fantail Shubunkin Goldfish. But they have the long flowing tail than the Fan Tail Goldfish. Rather, it will not be an exaggeration to say that they have an enormous tail. This enormous tail is not only long but it is also wider than the Fan Tail Goldfish.
By wider the Fantail Goldfish I mean to say that it is very wide, way wider than the Fantail Goldfish. Also, the tail of Shubunkin Goldfish id forked but you can relate to this forked to be a sublime example of the tail of Fantail Goldfish. Not that much forked as that of the Fantail Goldfish.

As in the case of other Goldfish varieties the age of Shubunkin Goldfish is more than compared to others. It is around 15+ years. But that is with the same restrictions of the properly sized aquarium that should not be crowded. Also, the water quality should be decently good and filtration both mechanical and biological should be provided.

Speaking of colors, the blue Shubunkin Goldfish is the rarest and most prized among Shubunkin enthusiasts. Other than that there are various color options available in various combinations and patterns. Commonly you can find various shades of orange, brown, red, yellow, purple, black, gray and white. They are really beautiful to watch swimming.

One more thing, Shubunkin Goldfish is one of the hardy varieties of Goldfish. They are not particularly demanding of the water quality. They can survive in comparatively less maintained aquariums and ponds. But it is still better to provide them with some movement in water with some sort of both mechanical and biological filtration. As with the case of other goldfish breeds, they thrive in ponds. If you are keeping them in aquariums please ensure that no slow swimming varieties of Goldfish should be coupled with the Shubunkin Goldfish. Shubunkin Goldfish move fast and consume food faster than fancy delicate varieties of Goldfish like Pearl Scale Goldfish or Ranchu Goldfish.
As for the size they can reach 7+ inches in well maintained good sized aquariums. In ponds it’s a different story, they can get as big as 12+ inches. They are a beauty to watch in ponds and large aquariums.
You can definitely raise them with little efforts even if you e new to the freshwater fishes.
