Expenses of rearing an Afghan hound

Hello reader! Welcome to the series of dog breeds presented to you by Kaivalaya’s Ani-Mall. We are presently in the first part of our series in which we were presenting sighthounds. In the first chapter of this series, we were discussing the Afghan hound, in our previous post we have answered a couple of questions related to the price range of an Afghan hound and the amount of diet required to sustain an Afghan hound. In this post, we will look into the commitment required to groom the Afghan hound and one more question about raising the Afghan hound.

Grooming an Afghan houndLiving conditions for Afghan hound

As explained in our earlier posts and can be easily witnessed in pictures of Afghan hound you can easily imagine why grooming and maintaining optimum coat condition with Afghan hound is a challenge. The Afghan hound possesses a coat like no other breed in the world. The long silky coat is really difficult to maintain even if you are not considering showing your dog. Most of the owners who are not showing their Afghan hound in different kennel club shows prefer to keep the coat short by clipping the long and silky coat to an easy to maintain length. But if you are into Afghan hound for the purpose of showing your dog you should keep some things under consideration.

The long coat of Afghan hound must be brushed on regular basis otherwise it will get tangled very soon. Daily brisk brushing is necessary and thorough inspection to the entire coat is essential at least once a week. The soft brush of fine silky bristles must be used for quick daily brushing and hard bristle nylon brush must be used to untangle any knots in the coat. The brushing must be done with a light but firm stroke to avoid any uprooting of hair strands.

This attention to care is a necessity because it takes more than two years to develop a full show worthy coat. By being cautious you are preserving what is achieved by great patience.

Else, you can hire services of a professional groomer near you. But please keep in mind that one visit to a professional groomer will set you back by at least 60-75$. This too is for normal grooming and when you will mention the Afghan hound in groomers office prices are going to shoot up. You might end up paying 150-180$ for a normal grooming session for an Afghan hound. Also; these prices might vary (read it increase) depending on the area you are living in. if you are planning to get a home visit expect to pay a premium over normal charges.

It is in the best interest of the Afghan hound owners and their dogs that they should have time and money to raise a fine pet.

If these conditions pose a challenge to you and you are really committed to getting an Afghan hound than consider keeping your Afghan hound clipped in all seasons. This will save both time and money yet allows you to enjoy the company and personality of the Afghan hound.
