The egg fish goldfish as the name suggests is the breed of goldfish that is having body structure resembling an egg. The egg fish goldfish is not a very common variety of the fancy goldfish breeds but it is also not rare to find. This Goldfish Breed is closely related to the fantail goldfish. It is not particularly unusual but yes they do not have the back fin. It will be a cute addition to your aquarium. So, let us look into more details of this fish without any delay.

Egg fish goldfish General facts

As in the case of almost all the fancy goldfish breeds the development of the egg fish goldfish was initiated in mainland China. This is really an ancient breed of the fancy goldfish as the similar type of ornamental goldfish breed finds its place in Chinese literature as old as 800 years ago.

The modern-day egg fish goldfish, just as in the case of most all other fancy goldfish breeds credits its development to the goldfish enthusiasts and goldfish breeders of Japan.

  • They are cute, easy to read and easy to care for.
  • They are not as fast and big as comet goldfish or the common goldfish neither are as fragile as ranchu or lionchu goldfish.
  • The egg fish goldfish are available in all types of colors and all types of scales.

Let us now examine this Amazing Goldfish in detail.

Egg fish goldfish Physical appearance

As stated earlier the egg fish goldfish have a body structure resembling an egg. this breed of goldfish does invite a little underlying confusion because of its body shape. Actually, many other fancy goldfish breeds have an egg-shaped body. These are the oranda goldfish, the fantail goldfish, the black moor goldfish, the telescope goldfish and the celestial eye goldfish. The ranchu goldfish and the lion head goldfish also have the egg-shaped body but their bodies are more rounded off. All these breeds of the fancy goldfish are explained in our previous works which you can see on the links below.

Despite the similarity in structure with the above mentioned fancy goldfish breeds egg fish goldfish have a distinctive feature that separates them from all other egg-shaped body goldfishes. They don’t have the dorsal fin. This is the single most pronounced feature that separates them from the widely known fancy goldfish breeds. But then a question arises. How to distinguish them from ranchu goldfish, lion head goldfish, and the lionchu goldfish?

This is clearly done by looking at the differences in the body shapes. The ranchu goldfish, the lion head goldfish, and the lionchu goldfish have more rounded off spherical bodies that are wide and broad on the back. The backbone just before the tail also tapers down quite bluntly in ranchu goldfish, lionhead goldfish and the lionchu goldfish.

The bodies of this goldfish are slightly elongated and slender in comparison with the ranchu, lion head, and the lionchu goldfish.

Inside the breed, there is a variation available. Actually, this breed is found in two types of the tail. The short tail and the long tail. The long-tailed version of the egg fish goldfish is known as the phoenix egg fish goldfish and the short-tailed version is known as the egged tail egg fish goldfish.

One more thing, there is one more variation depending upon the anal fin of the egg fish goldfish. There are two different varieties that are spotted one with anal fins and one without anal fins. But this basis of classifying the egg fish goldfish is debatable. The supporters of no anal fin egg fish goldfish say that the proper egg shape is emphasized only with the absence of the anal fin. This feature, just being a genetic variation that is not completely and surely transferable generation after generations are rejected by those who oppose this type of classification.

Egg fish goldfish History

As I have mentioned earlier almost all the fancy goldfish breeds the development of this goldfish was initiated in mainland China.

From Japan, it was popularized to other parts of the world. But after some time, they lost their popularity to other fancy goldfish breeds.

Then in the mid-twentieth century, a private aquarium in China made efforts to popularize this breed of goldfish the egg fish goldfish again. It was reported that they have sent some blue colored egg fish goldfish in an attempt to popularize them across mainland China. Unfortunately, the egg fish goldfish failed to appeal to general public looking forward to owning an ornamental goldfish just for the sake of beauty. They are still rare but they do make their presence felt at the goldfish specialty shows and more commonly in their country of origin.

Egg fish goldfish Colors and scales

Egg fish goldfish is found in almost all goldfish colors. Solid colors like red and orange are most common. Many shades of these two colors are seen in this breed of goldfish. Apart from this, the bi-colored varieties are also found. White and red, white and orange in different patterns are spotted in this fancy breed of goldfish. The blue color, especially in the Phoenix variety of the egg fish goldfish known as the blue phoenix egg fish is the rarest and most prized of all the egg fish goldfish variations.

They are also found in all types of scale, be it metallic matte or nacreous type.  I would like to point out here that all types of scales do not include newly discovered batik type of scales. This particular type of scale is new to the goldfish world and is not yet any documented evidence of the occurrence of this type of scale in this goldfish breed.

Egg fish goldfish Care

Egg fish goldfish are relatively easy to care. They are not over demanding with cleanliness and feeding. But please keep eye on one thing. Though they are slender than their ranchu goldfish cousins this does not give them the ability to survive and thrive with the fast moving type of tank mates that will not leave any food for the adorable egg fish goldfish.  So, please don’t keep them with a comet or common goldfish.

The temperature range of the thermostat in the egg fish goldfish aquarium should be kept low to about 18-degree centigrade. This is common with all varieties of goldfish because they are cold water freshwater fish.

Egg fish goldfish Life expectancy

They can live fairly long. As I have stated in my earlier works, a well maintained and large aquarium will be a major factor in determining the life expectancy of your egg fish goldfish. The aquarium should not be overcrowded and each fish should have at least 25 liters of water available to them. They will do best in a large outdoor goldfish pond.

Here I would like to conclude this post.

Enjoy rearing your egg fish goldfish.
