Azawakh temperament: Welcome to the series of dog breeds brought to you by Kaivalaya’s Ani-Mall. In the first part of our series in which we were presenting sighthounds. In the second chapter of this part, we were discussing the Azawakh. We have laid down general history, physical standard and other information about Azawakh hound in our previous posts of this chapter. In this post we will give a general and brief account of the Azawakh temperament. Understanding Azawakh temperament is necessary to handle this breed properly. In addition to this knowing about Azawakh temperament will help you understand the needs of Azawakh hound better and will help you keep your dog happy.

Azawakh Temperament: Most Important Thing You Must Acknowledge

Before even bringing an Azawakh hound to your home you must be aware of certain things. Above all, you must acknowledge that Azawakh is a sighthound breed bred to protect livestock and to follow their instincts. You need to clearly understand the need for physical exercise and mental stimulation must for this breed. Also, since this is a very new breed to the world outside their region of origin, their temperament has not been settled into a definable mold. There is a wide range of temperament reported in Azawakh hound by the owners. You may find an Azawakh to be a perfect lap dog that just loves to cuddle and enjoys human company and you may come across another Azawakh who has a strong instinct to be protective and wary of strangers with a strong dislike to be touched. These two different extremities can be found in the same dog that will act like a toy dog with its family but changes its behavior when around strangers. So beware to handle a difficult dog.

But like most other difficult tagged breeds Azawakh hound is also manageable with a strong mind and loving hand.

Azawakh Temperament: Azawakh Hound and its Human Family

Don’t be disheartened by reading the above subtopic. As indicated above Azawakh are very loving towards their close family. As I have mentioned in my earlier post, Azawakh is a pack dog, not a lone hunter. They always follow the lead of the alpha male or female. The temperament may differ from dog to dog but what is written in the genetic code can never be undone. Provide your Azawakh a proper leadership so that it can place all its trust in you and you will have a loving dog that is more than willing to protect its family from all. This tendency of evolving into a superb guard and protection dog has made a bad name for Azawakh around strangers or the people it dislikes. But I believe that is a good thing in the interest of the close family.

Azawakh Temperament: Early Socialization.

A breed like Azawakh needs early socialization. Issues with Azawakh temperament can be easily answered if prospective owners are willing to take up early socialization as an absolute must. Early socialization will help soften Azawakh temperament from being a fierce livestock guardian to being a dog that is more suited for city dwellers. Early socialization with family members, relatives, close friends, neighbors, other household dogs and other small animals like cats will be hugely helpful in eliminating the possibility of any undesirable events in the future.

But still, even after the early socialization Azawakh temperament calls for being cautious with your dog when strangers like a visiting technician or a mailman or any less than frequent visitors are around in your home or yard. This extra caution should be more proficient with the males of the Azawakh breed.

Azawakh Temperament: Conclusion.

Azawakh temperament is not a big problem but it can cause problems if early socialization is not done. Apart from that a master with a strong mind and firm but loving hand will produce best results for the Azawakh breed. Azawakh temperament is also affected by the need of exercise and curbing their wanderlust. This is more related to the topic of exercising your Azawakh hound. This I will discuss in some other post.
