Azawakh Hound: Physical Appearance

Azawakh Hound: Physical Appearance: Welcome to the series of dog breeds presented to you by Kaivalaya’s Ani-Mall. We are presently in the first part of our series in which we were presenting sighthounds. In the second chapter of this series, we are providing Azawakh hound information. In our previous post, we have given a brief introduction to the developmental history of Azawakh hound. In this post, we are going to talk about the physical appearance of the Azawakh hound.

Morphology of Azawakh hound

The shape and size of the Azawakh hound is similar to other oriental sight hound dogs belonging to Arab regions and south India. The Arabic hounds and the south Indian hounds are all bred for coursing and hunting on flatlands. They all are long-legged and very light in weight. High stamina, endurance, good overall health conditions, swift movements are the characteristics that are shared by the Azawakh hound with the oriental sighthounds. In between these similarities, there are some differences also that are unique to the Azawakh hound that makes them stand out of the lot.

The first difference that catches our sight is the back of the Azawakh hound. If we compare the body structure of the Arabic hounds and the south Indian hounds with the Azawakh hound we can spot following differences,

  1. The length of the back of Azawakh hound is shorter than that of other sighthounds of Arabic and south Indian origins.
  2. Arch of the backbone present in the hounds of Arabic and south Indian origin is not as prominent in the Azawakh hound. The dome-shaped or the arched profile of the back is instantly recognizable in hounds of Arabic and south Indian origins but is absent in the Azawakh hound.
  3. The Azawakh hound is also having legs that are comparatively longer than the other hounds. This doesn’t make the Azawakh hound the tallest hound but this study is more content with respect to the ratio of height and the length of the backbone.
  4. The hips of Azawakh hound are also a little higher than the shoulders. This imparts a very unique back profile to the Azawakh hound. This also contributes to the apparently straight back of the Azawakh hound
