Before starting I would like to clarify the difference between Arowana fish feeding and arowana fish food. These two terms seems similar but are actually different.

Arowana fish feeding deals with the feeding schedule of arowana fish rather than the types of food that we provide to arowana fish. There are different case scenario of arowana fish feeding with different stages of life and also with different breeds.

Baby arowana fish feeding: problems.

Baby arowana fish feeding is a tricky business. For the underlying difficulty in raising arowana form very young age I will suggest that you should always get a young arowana that has grown to a size of at least six to seven inches in body length.

Maintaining an appropriate feeding schedule for your baby arowana is quite hectic and a job of great commitment. You must understand some very basic and important aspects relating specifically with raising baby arowana in captivity.

Baby arowana are very fragile. In the aquarium trade retailers often sell very small arowana babies that are just 3-4 inches long. This is illegal in several states because of several reasons. Foremost being the unethical exploitation of Arowana fish. Most of the babies die in transportation because of starvation. Even if some percentage reach to customers, most do not possess experience, knowledge and commitment to raise a baby arowana.

what to do with arowana babies?

To avoid such cruelty its of utter importance that you should buy trade certified arowana bred in certified arowana farms. Yes the certified arowana will be twice or thrice as expensive as illegal one but buying a certified arowana will ensure that they have been treated well and being transported with utmost care and in accordance with the law.

Secondly, certified arowana will be around an year old and will be on a commercial feed. This will save you a lot of hardship of preparing food and providing varied diet to your arowana fish.

To be true there is just 10% or may be less percentage of certified arowana fish in the trade. Now lets see what you can do if somehow you end up having 3-4 inches very young fragile arowana individual.

Dealing with baby arowana.

First of all learn to recognize the specific breed falling in your lap. This is because low muscle density breeds like southern secleropages (southern jardini or south Australian arowana) and green arowana are far less likely to make it to adulthood if they land in the aquariums of new comers to arowana.

Baby arowana fish feeding especially in case of these above mentioned breeds is very tricky. Baby arowana are moody and they need very frequent feeding. You will be  required to feed juveniles as much as 4-5 times a day. They need  a balanced diet to develop into healthy adults. Being moody and choosy will pose a great challenge for you in providing a varied and balanced diet. Mostly the heavy breeds like Australian jardini arowana will defy odds and will make it to adulthood rather easily.

Feeding baby arowana.

In my personal experience live feed will works better for small baby arowana. Almost always my personal fishes have preferred live feed over pallets and meat. In feeding live fish you must take notice that too big fish will not be swallowed properly and might pose a danger of choking to your baby arowana. A few times i have raised baby arowana form barely 3 inch size and of all the breed i have and had in past I found green arowana and southern seclaropages the most challenging to raise. I will illustrate my experience in some other work but for now let me point out some important factors in baby arowana fish feeding.

  • baby arowana fish feeding must be done 4-5 times a day.
  • high quality protein is must.
  • chop down meats or any other feed you are providing to about 1/4 of their mouth size.
  • live feed will work better in schedule of baby arowana fish feeding.
  • hard shell live feed or too big live feed must be avoided.
  • a mixture of several diets must be provided to keep all nutrients balanced in their diet.
  • all uneaten food must be removed within half an hour.

Young Arowana fish feeding.

Young arowana fish feeding have a few scenarios.

You will be more familiar with the fish if you have raised it from early stage. In a different case you might be getting a fish from the market and will be unfamiliar to the behavior and habits of the fish. Let us discuss both cases in detail.

Case 1: you have this fish right from its infancy.

When the arowana you have raised form early stage transits to young stage you will observe some changes. There will be changes in acceptability of arowana towards person or persons who are feeding the fish for a long time.  The aggression during the time interval of arowana fish feeding will reduce to some extant. They will be more predictable to you leaping and attacking for the food. At this stage young arowana fish feeding will be more enjoyable and manageable. You will be knowing the likes and dislikes of your young arowana regarding feeding, playing and touching.

To clarify this more let me illustrate transition of my Jardini arowana and my Green Arowana form very small size of 3 inches to 7 and 5 inches respectively. Here, I would like to point out that in this work I will only give account of the change i have observed in the arowana fish feeding pattern and behavior. Other aspects I will discuss later when I will Highlight specific breeds.

My own experience.

Most prominent change in the young arowana fish feeding is in appetite of the fish. There  is a vast change in the amount of food that your arowana will be consuming by now. One more thing you will observer is the increase in the time interval between two meals. The fish will start to discard food if been feed too frequently. Please take note that when we were discussing the baby arowana fish feeding then it was required to feed your fish 4-5 times a day. But in due course of time this frequency is going to get down slowly form 3 to 2 to reduce to just one meal a day when they will grow to about five to six inches in length.

By this time they will start accepting variety of foods both fresh and frozen meats and commercial Arowana foods. Your stress regarding the young arowana fish feeding will be greatly revealed by this time so as the effort you will have to put in preparing meals for your fish. One thing here i would like to highlight that my green arowana never accepted the commercially prepared food. I tried several brands of Arowana sticks but that fish never swallowed a single one.

Full grown arowana fish feeding.

A full grown arowana fish in your aquarium will be a sight to behold. It will be your pride. Because by this time you have invested much in its development and it will win you admiration all over. At this stage of life its requirement of nutrition will change and you have to adjust its diet accordingly.

Changes in feeding pattern.

A full grown arowana fish feeding will be less frequent. A full grown arowana will not require daily feeding. In fact you don’t have to feed your mature arowana more than once a week. Also by this time it is most likely that they will accept commercial feeds readily. You will be less burdened with preparing fresh meat meals and frozen meat meals for your fish. Please remember that feeding more than this frequency might result in overburdening the digestive system of full grown arowana. Additionally contaminating the aquarium water with left over excess food.

There are some health issues that may arise with arowana because of excessive feeding and fatty diet. Its necessary to try to balance out the nutritional needs of your fish.

What should we feed? What should not be fed to Arowana? How much is to be fed? All these questions and more will be dealt with in upcoming articles so stay tuned.
