We are in the middle of the series in which we are presenting information about different dog breeds. In the first part of this series we were bringing sighthounds to you and here are some of the interesting Azawakh dog facts. Some of this information we already have provided in our introduction to this chapter. This post provides Azawakh hound facts in a nutshell.

Azawakh Dog Facts: Origin.

  1. Ancient breed.
  2. Arab influence.
  3. Profile similar to Soulghi.
  4. Previously called as Taureg Soulghi.
  5. Bred for many centuries in western Africa.
  6. Bred by various nomadic tribes of West Africa like Tuareg, Fula etc.
  7. The region associated with Azawakh are Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso and Algeria.
  8. Called as “Oska” by Tuareg tribe.
  9. Originated from the Pariah dogs.
  10. Closely related to bush dogs, Basenji, sloughi.
  11. No close relation to other sighthounds.
  12. Rare GPI enzyme proves them to be an ancient basal breed that was developed separately.

Azawakh Dog Facts: Specialty.

  1. Used as Guard Dog.
  2. Used as a hunting dog.
  3. Works in high heat conditions that could kill an English Greyhound.
  4. Can attain the speed of 40 miles an hour.
  5. Used to hunt Gazelle and hare and other small animals native to the region.
  6. Very Rugged breed with loads of stamina.
  7. Very hardy breed to withstand the harsh dry mountain environment of western Africa.

  9. Not an independent hunter like Soulghi.
  10. Azawakh is a pack hunter.
  11. The whole pack of Azawakh will follow the lead of the alpha dog to hunt down game or predator.

Azawakh Dog Facts: Temperament

  1. The wide range of temperaments.
  2. Varies from dog to dog.
  3. Some are quite fierce some are lap dogs.
  4. Affectionate towards a close family.
  5. Wary of strangers.
  6. Early socialization is an absolute must.
  7. Properly socialized Azawakh hound is good with children, cats and other dogs.
  8. Needs firm hand and guidance around strangers.
  9. An Azawakh doesn’t like to be touched by a stranger.
  10. Highly affectionate to the master.
  11. The Azawakh breed is not inherently dangerous but varies from dog to dog.
  12. Azawakh likes warm to hot weather but hates rain and cold.
  13. Like wolves, they have the complex social structure of hierarchy.

Azawakh Dog Facts: Appearance

  1. The height of males is in between 25-29 inches.
  2. The weight of males lie in the range of 20-25 kgs.
  3. The height of females is in between 24-28 inches.
  4. The weight of females lies in the range of 15-20 kgs.
  5. Coat of an Azawakh is short and fine.
  6. Preferred color is fawn but native population doesn’t have any problem with any colors.
  7. Elegant, study, fine hunting dog.

  2. Not fully recognized and listed by AKC.
  3. Recognized by AKC under Foundation Stock Service.
  4. Recognized by AKC under Miscellaneous class.
  5. Recognized by kennel club UK under hound dog for import registry.
  6. Recognized by new Zealand kennel club.
