Journey Started with Dogs – The Wonderful World Of Pets

Hi! “So you are looking for animals”. Before going any further let me tell you something. My Name is Rishabh Pathak and I am not a claimed expert on animals and Pets. I am not having a degree in any sort of biological studies, though I would love to. But yes, I am with animals for my whole 30 years life. Right from my childhood, I was always fascinated by animals.

I have dogs, cats, birds, fishes, rabbits, guinea pigs, horses, goats, sheep, and cattle. But it was not always like this. Let me tell you a story about how my liking? Turned into the passion for animals according to me and madness according to my wife. Ha! I don’t care.

Beginning- that doesn’t have any ‘End’ and Jakie

Rishabh Pathak journey The Wonderful World Of Pets

So I was telling you about my beginning. You might find my story familiar, might have happened to your family or friends or neighbors and most likely, since you are searching, to you. I had dogs and cats right from the age of 1 years. A German shepherd mix and a common grey stray cat. I have started keeping animals professionally after the age of 17 years and in between, I had many dogs and cats, a few pigeon and fishes, white rats.

My first Guddy was a German shepherd mix called ‘Jakie’. Our family had his mother before my birth and Jakie was born at my granny’s home in creepy bazaar Jhansi, UP. He was elder to me, born 3 months prior to my birth. I have always treated him like a brother. I still remember how tolerant he was with me. I used to ride him, play with him, pull his ears, grab his nose, Lang on his tail and many another mischief that could annoy any dog. But boy, that dog was tolerant. He never showed aggression towards me.

My mother used to tell a story that how I slept with him and he didn’t move a muscle for hours. He showed care. He was, actually the foundation of my love towards animals. He taught me that there is something more in life than prams and garden walks. He showed me that we are not born with hatred and disgust, that compassion and care can be nurtured in a child if he or she is allowed to have a wonderful loving animal around.

I will never forget him. His memories still wet my eyes. Many of my training customers ask me about how to supervise a dog around children. I just tell them one thing, first teach your children to respect the dog, then learn to socialize your dog properly. After this, you will never need to supervise any of then neither your dog nor your child. Jakie passed away when I was 12 or 15 years old, and I regret that I was away in my summer classes.

My Second Dog Princee and her daughter Goldie

When Jakie was 5 years old, I got my second dog, a bitch actually, golden colored german spitz ‘Princee’. She was a wonderful girl. This time my approach was changed and I was trying to be a more matured pet owner. My father helped me a lot with her. Her morning walk was my dad’s responsibility and in evening I took care of her exercise. She lived with me till I was around 19. Later we also had one of her son ‘Teddy’ and when she was 6 years old from her last litter, I just managed to convince my parents to keep one of her daughters.

The Wonderful World Of Pets...The Start-Up

We named her ‘Goldie’. Teddy didn’t  get to spend much time with us. He was killed by some unidentified infection, or at least vet told us so. Remembering his symptoms, I can now tell you that he was struck by canine influenza. But I enjoyed my time with Goldie for a long period of 13 years till I turned 24. Though, in the meantime, I had one lab, one Doberman, and a Saint Bernard also. My lab, Max, was all about fast wagging tail, smiley faces, and energy bursts all the time. A playful bundle of joy that depends on my love for dogs. But this all came between my term with my Doberman ‘Dexter’.

Dexter: Some Serious Dog Bites

He was the one who really taught me to respect dogs. Here I mean respect on a serious note. He Lived with me for first a brief period of 2 years. I raised him from the age of just 23 days. You might hear about stories of Doberman attacking his own master, I say, they are true. During this 2 years time, I had been bitten by him for 7 times and a couple of those bites were serious. Mostly he behaved properly, but there are a few situations in which his aggression grows on to him. He was most annoyed when I had to leave for a long period of more than a day. It around 2 – 3 hours each time to melt down his aggression.

You may come across the term separation anxiety’, I had a first-hand experience with it. Believe me, you do not want that thing growing in your dog especially in a large and capable breed like Doberman, Rottweiler, pit bull or any other large working breed. By this, you might be thinking that these breeds are dangerous. What I say! Yes and No. Yes, because when agitated, they can inflict really serious damage to whom they attack. Even small nipping can rip off your skin and expose your flesh, that could take a month to heal completely. And did you remember I said ‘No’, yes no in the capital, Because:-

An aggressive dog is a reflection of the bad, weak, lazy, and immature owner.

Now to prove my point, Let me explain the situations with my Doberman.

    1. I was an inexperienced owner, to work with a demanding breed.
    2. I misjudged the needs of my dogs.
    3. I didn’t give him enough exercise
    4. I was totally unaware of the need of mental stimulation of the breed I had chosen.
    5. I didn’t do anything to counter the separation anxiety in my Doberman.
    6. I reluctantly overlooked the signs of problems building in my Doberman.
    7. My ego didn’t allow me to accept the mistakes that I have been making with my Doberman.
    8. I treated all my dogs in a similar fashion. Remember every breed has different characteristics. Every single dog’s need is different and they should be addressed differently.

The Last Time I Saw Him

I had to change my approach towards him, and I tried a lot to change my habits but, it was late. One night I was out, and he attacked my father. Daddy sustained a profound injury in the right arm. After this, though it broke my heart, I gave him away to a police officer. With him gone a part of my soul shattered. The day I dropped him at Mr. Mukesh Sharma’s house was the last day I saw him. I have always known and I accepted my responsibility to drive him away. I never went to see him again.

Truth is that I never gathered enough courage to look at him and say ‘Dexter, I am sorry for what I have done to you’. I still have not for giving my self for what happened to him. After Dexter gone, Golide completed her age at 13 years and died in may 2008. She went on hiring a healthy life throughout, Though in her last days she had a kidney problem, difficulty in urinating and cataract.

She also has developed a lipo mass under her rib-cage but that, I believe, Didn’t bother her or vet in any way. She was sweet, and have a special place in my heart. After the incident of Dexter and death of Golide and Max, I’ve decided to stop bringing dogs in. It was really painful to leave them or see them dying.
