General introduction of jardini arowana.

Jardini arowana is an ancient arowana species. The evolution of this species dates back to millions of years to the lower Jurassic period. Actually the ancestors of all Asian arowana species, African arowana and both lines of Australian arowana are same. Yeah it is interesting.

When the Indian plate moved further towards the Asian plate a bifercation between ancestors of Asian and Australian arowana took place. The Australian line further evolved into Jardini and southern saratoga.

Physical features.

Jardini is very much identical to Asian arowana species. They are sometimes be even sold as Golden arowana to unsuspecting customers. Sometimes even the seller is complete stranger to this breed and acquires them as golden arowana. What a pity! Therefore this post is really important so that you might not end up spending more than what a jardini demands. Because Golden species of asian arowana are a bit expensive than jardini.

One thing that seperates them with Asian arowana is their full developed body and scales. We will talk about the scales and color later for now lets look into some very particular to fully developed jardini.

There is a little bit difference in length between jardini and their Asian counterpart. Jardini grow about 35-36 inches in length where as Asian arowana grows to about 36-42 inches. But the major difference comes in the form of width. Jardini is about 28-29% in width to the body length but width of Asian arowana is about 23-25 % to length.

To simplify things imagine an arowana that is three feet in length and close to a feet in width. I cant show you because I dont have such picture but believe me that is a sight to behold. That stocky bulky fish just takes my breath away.

So, how do you identify a jardini arowana?

Identifying the Jardini arowana.

Well, in my previous post about southern saratoga I have given a brief account of this. Let us talk in detail here. Alright, so first of all I would like to point out the most attractive attribute of this species, at least for me.

Instincts In Business

how heavy is this fish?

Jardini arowana is the heavy weight of world of arowana. They are the most densely packed arowana fish. Highest muscle mass in all the osteoglossidae family. Do you know a full grown Asian arowana to its highest can reach upto !5-17 kg where as a fully developed jardini may easily be around 23-27 kg. Yeah it is a behemoth of a fish. And i love to keep massive pets. Or, at least there is a possibility of that. Don’t you want it? I do!

Color and scales.

Next is the color of this fish. This fish appears to be a shade of dull gold. But, as we know the color of any arowana is the color of their scales. So, let us look at this identification. Scales of jardini are a little bit small than Asian arowana. But, they are numerous, far greater in number than that of their Asian counterparts.

There are 7-8 rows of scales on the jardini. All these scales are aligned in horizontal stacks and their size is variable, reducing towards the tail.

There is one very peculiar feature related to jardini arowana scales.Apart form the color they have red dots, 7-8 dots arranged at every scales end edge. As the fish matures these dots darkens and impart the beautiful red on the edge look to the jardini.

Conclusion

I just cant explain in words how much I adore this fish. Yes, Asian arowana is more popular and more easily available. But there is something about this heavy weight of Arowanas. I love the proportions, simply stunning and regal. I have tried to cover most of the points and along with some of my earlier posts I hope that you would be satisfied and will be updated on the Jardini arowana.
