In the first chapter of this series, we were discussing the Afghan hound<\/a> in our previous post we have provided you a brief account on Afghan hound exercise requirements<\/a>. In this post, we will give you a brief account on Afghan hound health issues. Afghan hound health issues are numerous some are inherited some are lifestyle born but most of these Afghan hound health issues can be prevented. Let\u2019s look into this in details.<\/p>\n

Afghan hound health issues in general<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Being a sighthound Afghan hound shares some of its breed related and lifestyle associated problems with other sighthounds. Being a feisty sighthound, Afghan hound likes to run at higher speeds than other common household breeds. Afghan hound likes to jump a lot and as I have mentioned earlier in my posts that this breed is wary of strangers but loves its master and act like a clown around the people this dog loves. They tend to get overexcited meeting their family and in this excitement, they may damage their limbs.<\/p>\n

Afghan hound health issues involve muscular and skeletal injuries like fractures, pulled or torn muscles damaged or pulled ligaments, broken or damaged nails and toes, injuries to padded paws and a few other similar Afghan hound health issues.<\/p>\n

These lifestyle-related Afghan hound health issues can be prevented by cautious control over hyperactivity or your dog. You can resolve good training practices to establish respect between you and your dog.<\/p>\n

These Afghan hound health issues are related to structural and muscular problems. Let us now look into genetic problems.<\/p>\n

Genetic Afghan hound health issues <\/strong><\/h2>\n

Genetic Afghan hound health issues are inherited from parents by puppies. Major genetic problem is blindness in puppies. Some lines are more prone to hip and elbow dysplasia but this problem can occur in dogs because of rough lifestyle also. Bloating is also a problem in Afghan hound but this can\u2019t be specified as the purely genetic problem though some lines are more prone to gastrointestinal disorders than others.<\/p>\n

Thyroid disease is the major genetic problem in Afghan hound and is also the most widely encountered disorder in Afghan hound. Thyroid disease also cannot be equated with the purely genetic disease but yes, some lines are more prone than others.<\/p>\n

Some cautions regarding Afghan hound health issues<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Other than above Afghan hound health issues there are some situations that you should be aware of. The Afghan hound is a sighthound and these dogs have a high metabolism rate so the fat deposition is virtually absent. Because of this extremely low fat under the skin situation anesthetics should be administered with cautions as the very small amount will be effective on this breed.<\/p>\n

Secondly, the shaggy and long coat is prone to skin problems. They can develop itch quite easily and at the faster pace than other breeds. Sometimes allergies can also give rise to skin problems.<\/p>\n

Lastly, some Afghan hound health issues can be avoided and some Afghan hound health issues can be prevented. To avoid the eye, thyroid and joint problems please buy your pup from reputed Afghan hound breeders who have tested their dogs for above mentioned genetic Afghan hound health issues.<\/p>\n

Some problems you can avoid by raising your dog with love and firm discipline.<\/p>\n
